Chocolate Recipe Contest Rules

The goal of this event is to bring families and friends together in the kitchen and out to the beach to make wonderful chocolaty memories.

TIME and PLACE

The Chocolate Recipe Contest will take place at the Pacific Beach Community Church at 19 4th St. South (next door to Pacific Beach Elementary) beginning at noon Saturday, February 24, 2018.

DIVISIONS AND CATEGORIES

There are several divisions and categories so the entire family can enter. Entries are open to everyone (except judges!!).

Divisions:

Professional

Open to those who work professionally in a restaurant, bakery, or as a caterer or are representing a restaurant, bakery, or other food-related businesses for foods that can be consumed by anyone.

General

Open to those not working in the food industry as a professional for foods that can be consumed by anyone.

Kids 10+ (Ages 10-16) Unrestricted.

The purpose of this division is to encourage the love of chocolate and baking. We ask that they do as much of a recipe as safety allows.

Children <10 (Under age 10) Unrestricted. The purpose of this division is to encourage the love of chocolate and baking. We ask that they do as much of a recipe as safety allows.

Categories:

Desserts (cakes and pies)

Baked Goods (brownies, bars, cookies, etc.)

Sweets (truffles, candy, fudge, etc.)

Savory (entrées, side dishes, etc.)

Best of Theme (could be any of the above categories representing this year’s theme)

ENTRY FEES

Professional $ 25.00

General $ 5.00

Kids 10+ (Ages 10-16) No Fee

Children <10 (Under age 10) No Fee

Contestants may enter multiple dishes in multiple categories with a fee for each entry, as applicable. The fees help offset the cost of trophies and plaques.

For General and Kids/Children’s entries, applications and fees are due on the day of the event, Saturday, February 24, 2018.

RECIPES

We are asking all entrants to submit recipes for their entries. These recipes will be collected and later turned into a cookbook. (Professionals may decline to publish their recipes!) Entrants are encouraged to tell a brief story about their recipes. For example, an entrant from the Kids or Children division might write about his/her grandma’s cookies. Be creative and have fun!

GENERAL RULES

1. Entries cannot be previously published (with the exception of Kids & Children).

2. Commercial mixes are only allowed in the Kids & Children divisions.

3. Entries must be turned in on time to qualify.

4. Entries must be on non-breakable, disposable plates or platters.

5. Recipe Contest Judges may not enter.

6. Please list basic ingredients such as nuts, seeds, fruits, wheat, etc., for people with food allergies.

7. Please provide samples for at least 8 judges. (There is no longer a Festival bake sale.)

8. If you are submitting a dish that needs to be served at a certain temperature, like a frozen or hot dish, please let us know in advance so we can make arrangements for your entry to be judged correctly.

ENTRY SUBMISSION

Professional entry contestants will turn in their goodies at Pacific Beach Community Church at 19 4th St. S. (next door to Pacific Beach Elementary) from 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM Saturday, February 24, 2018.

General and Kids/Children entry contestants will turn in their goodies, entry forms, and fees at the Pacific Beach Community Church at 19 4th St. S. (next door to Pacific Beach Elementary) from 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Professional 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

General 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Children 10+ ( Ages 10-16) 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Up To 10 Points For Presentation

Up To 20 Points For Taste

WINNERS AND AWARDS

Winners will be notified that they placed by phone or by person Saturday evening the 24th. Awards and placement will be announced at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 25, 2018, at the “Hall of Sweets” and will be given as follows:

Professional 1st Place Traveling trophies to show off at their businesses. In January 2019, a plaque will be given when the traveling trophy is returned to the Chocolate Recipe Coordinator.

Winners of each category will have their pictures taken on Sunday, February 25, 2018, after the announcement of awards at 3:00 PM and published in the media, as well as the Festival’s web page and other publications.

All businesses who have entries and who participate in the Festival will be advertised.
